Terminology, tools, and techniques of basic fusing and slumping.
-
Types of glass, glass selection, and design considerations.
-
Glass cutting - straight cuts, curved cuts, and circles.
-
How heat affects glass, glass compatibility, annealing glass, and more.
-
Fundamentals of kilns, firing glass, and firing schedules.
-
Safety in the studio and troubleshooting.
Explore! Use a wide variety of glass, design techniques, mold materials, and basic equipment for shaping and finishing your glass art.
What to expect? A small class size. Finished projects include a 6" square plate and an 8" round bowl.
Lots of learning, lots of creativity, lots of laughs!
Introduction to Glass Powders
Prerequisite: Introduction to Kilnformed Glass
Tuition: $225 due at registration
Total Class Time: 8 hours (4 sessions)
Are you interested in discovering how to create imagery, pattern, and an enormous range of subtlety and effect in your kilnformed work? Then this class is for you! You will be introduced to working with crushed glass powders on sheet glass through a series of hands-on exercises. Powders allow you to expand the range of possibilities that can be achieved in your work and provide vast territory for exploration and discovery!
What to expect? A load of powder tiles and components for future use. One large final project.
Introduction to Reactive Glasses
Prerequisite: Introduction to Kilnformed Glass
Tuition: $250 due at registration
Total Class Time: 8 hours (4 sessions)
Do you like designing with earth tones and organic qualities? Then this class is for you! You will be introduced to the exploration of reactive chemistries of glass. Through a series of hands-on exercises, you will learn to use specific glass colors to create visual and stunning reactions between glasses. Discover a new world of opportunities for enhancing your kilnformed glass work!
What to expect? A load of reactive glass samples, a 10"x10" plate, and a final project.
NEW! Basic Pattern Bars
Prerequisite: Introduction to Kilnformed Glass
Tuition: $250 due at registration
Total Class Time: 8 hours (4 sessions)
Explore dimensional, organic patterning! Pattern bars are thick slabs constructed from colored sheet glass and sometimes other accessory glasses. Learn three methods of constructing basic pattern bars. Then you will slice the slabs into thin cross sections to expose unique and repeating patterns that can be used as design elements in your work. You will complete two projects using these design elements and finish your projects with basic coldworking.
What to expect? Multiple pattern bar components. Two finished projects.
NEW! Strip Construction
Prerequisite: Introduction to Kilnformed Glass Tuition: $250 due at registration
Total Class Time: 10 hours (4 sessions) Explore on-edge construction and sophisticated design! Learn to consistently cut thin strips of glass and place them on edge to produce two stunning pieces - one made of strips of colored glasses, and one that incorporates windows. Using dams to control volume and coldworking equipment to finish the edges of your works, you will explore a time-honored method pioneered by Klaus Moje, "the father of contemporary kiln-glass."
What to expect? Two fused, slumped, and finished 7"x 7" square bowls.
NEW! Layered Powder Imagery
Prerequisite: Introduction to Glass Powders Tuition: $195 due at registration
Total Class Time: 6 hours (3 sessions)
Depth and layers of imagery can be achieved by using crushed glass powders on sheet glass. If you have been to our gallery and have seen the wonderful painterly work of a few of our artists, then you understand why we love this process. Moving beyond our intro class, learn to use layers of sheet glass and crushed glass powders, along with dams to control volume, to create your own layered powder imagery. You will finish the edges of your work through coldworking. What to expect? One finished 10"x10" panel of 4-5 layers in thickness.
NEW! Basic Kilncarving Prerequisite: None - no experience necessary! Tuition: $75 due at registration Total Class Time: 3 hours (1 session) Kilncarving is a unique way to add sculptural quality to glass. Learn to create bas relief images to incorporate design into your glass work. You will build a platform for your materials and a dam to control volume. Glass will be set on top of your design, then gravity and the kiln will do the remaining work! What to expect? One 10"x10" kilncarving.
NEW! Basic Sandblasted Design Prerequisite: None. No experience necessary! Tuition: $95 due at registration Total Class Time: 4 hours (1 session) Explore etching designs on glass through sandblasting! You will choose designs and learn to use masking materials. You'll then learn how to use a sandblasting unit to create stunning art pieces. We'll work with transparent, opalescent, and iridized glasses. Best of all, no previous glass experience is needed. How much fun can you have in four hours! What to expect? Sample sandblasted tiles, and one fused and slumped 8" bowl.
NEW! Cutting Circles Prerequisite: None. No experience necessary! Tuition: $75 due at registration Total Class Time: 3.5 hours (1 session) You may have taken a glass class at one point in time, but never learned to cut a circle. This class is for you! Although we teach circle cutting in our Intorduction to Kilnformed Glass class, we understand that there are gaps in learning when classes have been taken elsewhere. To help you close the gap, youwill learn to cut 8" circles as well as cute little 2"-3" circles. You will then use your circles to design an 8" plate. Gap closed! What to expect? Various circle cutting and one fused & slumped 8" round plate.
Project: Bubble Plate
Prerequisites: None. No experience necessary!
Tuition: $65 due at registration
Total Class Time: 2 hours (1 session)
Learn to capture bubbles in glass and mean it! A fun way to create a unique plate that begs, "How did you do that?"
What to expect? One 10"x10" fused and slumped bubble plate.
Project: Linear Reaction Plate
Prerequisites: None. No experience necessary!
Tuition: $65 due at registration
Total Class Time: 2 hours (1 session)
Learn how special colors and effects can be achieved when glass chemistries interact. Through this guided project, you will produce a cleanly designed fused and slumped plate that incorporates reactive sheet glass and stringers.
What to expect? One 9"x9" fused and slumped linear reaction plate.
Project: Woven Illusion Plate
Prerequisites: Glass cutting skills
Tuition: $65 due at registration
Total Class Time: 2 hours (1 session)
Learn to create a woven look on top of a solid base for a plate that doesn't leak. Illusion complete!
What to expect? One 10"x10" fused and slumped woven illusion plate.
Project: Mad As A Hatter Platter
Prerequisites: Introduction to Kilnformed Glass
Tuition: $95 due at registration
Total Class Time: 6 hours (2 sessions)
Learn how stacks of glass colors can create cool layered effects and add great impact to your work. Through this guided project, you will produce a madly designed long and sleek platter that incorporates small stacks of sheet glass and other components. You will return for a second session where you will learn to use shop equipment to finish the edges of your project before it is slumped to it's final shape.
